Adoption Tax Provisions in the Health Care Act

I was able to find some information regarding the status and the future of the Adoption Tax Credit. To read the history of the tax credit click here.  The adoption tax credit is part of a reconciliation bill that has not yet been passed by the Senate. However, should it pass, here is what has been proposed. As you know, currently the bill is to sunset on December 31, 2010. That time has been extended by one year. If the bill is to pass, the EGTRRA, Expansion of Adoption Credit, Adoption Assistance Programs, will sunset on December 31, 2011. Also, the maximum credit amount will be increased to $13,170.00 for both special needs and non-special needs adoptions. The maximum credit amount for 2009 was $12,150.00.

This information was taken from here.  Another source can be found here.

  1. The increase and sunset extension were contained in HR 3590, which was signed by President Obama. They are now officially law. They are not part of the pending reconciliation bill.
