Adoption Tax Credit 2010

The adoption tax credit has been a popular topic lately and many are wondering what is going to happen in 2010 when the credit that was established in 2001 expires. I have done research and have not been able to find any concrete information. The bill must be passed in the House and the Senate in order to remain in use.  Christian World Adoption has posted some helpful information concerning the Federal Adoption Tax Credit, click here to read their call to action. They suggest sending a letter to your  Senator and Congressional representative urging them to support this bill. We can all help in this small way with just a few simple clicks of our mouse. As I discover new information, I will continue to share it with you. But for now, I am sending an email to my Senator and representative. To find your state Senator click here. It will take you to a drop down list of states and then to a list of your senators and finally to their home page. You can send an email to them from their home page. To find your representative click here and follow the instructions above. Good luck!!!

  1. Hi. Thank you for your information..this is a great sight. Do you know how many tax years the tax credits can be used and if we adopt a sibling group, does it apply only to the following tax year or can it be stretched out over future tax years? Thank you!

    • Charmaine,
Glad you found my site! According to my adoption lawyer, as long as you continue to qualify for the credit, you can continue to claim the adoption expenses on your taxes year after year until you receive all of your money back. Keep in mind that the credit is due to expire 12/31/10 unless Congress approves it to remain in use. There is a previous post that refers to this at more length if you want to know what you can do to help. Also, as far as I know, the credit applis to sibiling groups as well. I am not a professional, so I encourage you to continue to research your question. My knowledge is based upon my own experience and research. I am happy to help and welcome your questions! Hope this is helpful.

  2. I’ve started a Web site to share tips on how people can easily write to their representatives and senators to save the adoption tax credit. It also provides links to updates on the bill –

Please feel free to add to it and share any other tips or updates you have. Thanks!
