Book Review

The Complete Guide to International AdoptionWhen my husband and I first began to consider International Adoption, we purchased the book, The Complete Book of International Adoption by Dawn Davenport. It begins by comparing domestic and international adoption. Davenport does not recommend one over the other, she simply states facts about the differences and similarities. She includes information about selecting a country, an agency, what a home study is, tips on how to prepare financially and a slew of other topics. She includes worksheets that help with organization. There are also a number of personal experience essays that deal with various topics from a hesitant spouse to difficulty bonding with a child to fundraising for your adoption expenses. At the end of the book, there is a section that breaks down information for each country. We found this section to be most helpful. It was great to be able to see the various requirements, expenses, waiting period and other related topics divided up by country. The book was published in 2006, so there is a strong possibility that some of the country related information is out-dated, however we will still refer to this book when we begin research for our second adoption. To find updated information is only a click away!
